WORLD’S GREAT PUBLISHERS AND TRANSLATORS MEETING IN ISTANBUL

The Second International Symposium of Translators and Publishers of Turkish Literature with the collaboration of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, publishers, translators, authors, associations, copyright agencies and Boğaziçi University will be held between 29 and 30 May 2009 at Boğaziçi University.

Having been executing various preliminary projects in publishing area, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has been very successfully conducting the TEDA-Dissemination of Turkish Culture, Arts and Literature Abroad-since 2005. Within the framework of the project, which has attracted the international society since the very beginning, it is aimed to disseminate the Turkish culture through translation, publication or promotion of Turkish cultural, artistic and literary work outside of Türkiye.

It is conceived that translating Turkish literary works to foreign languages by the hands of brilliant translators constitutes the initial step on the way to the “counter translation movement” process. To achieve the goal of cultural orientation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism supports the activities regarding Turkish translators and gives priority to the projects on this route.

The Ministry’s initiative in relation to projects on Turkish translators began with the supports for TEÇCA (The Cunda International Workshop for the Translators of Turkish Literature) organized by Boğaziçi University since 2006. To create a wider platform for the activities concerning Turkish translators, it provided an international basis on which the whole constituents of the sector would share knowledge and make connection for copyright-translation affairs. ‘The First International Symposium of Translators and Publishers of Turkish Literature’ held in June 2007 was so effective that just in two years 500 Turkish literary works got involved in the subventions of TEDA Project.

Prospective participants show great interest to the International Symposium being held by close collaboration with Boğaziçi University, Turkish Publishers Association, Basın Yayın Birliği, Literary Translators Society (ÇEV-BİR) and Turkish Copyright Agencies between the 29 and 30 May 2009.

The main concept of the Symposium, determined to be held biennially, which more than fifty translators and, the managers and editors of prominent publishing houses from twenty-five countries will participate in, is to share the knowledge of translating classical and modern works of Turkish literature to foreign languages as well as publishing these literary treasures abroad. Creating an ambience through which authors, translators, academics, editors, managers of publishing houses, and copyright agencies could discuss the methods used during the process of translating and publishing Turkish cultural, artistic, and literary works at parallel sessions is aimed along the Symposium. It is also anticipated that the probable cooperation facilities through all processes comprising the procedures of writing-translating-printing-distributing a Turkish work would be deliberated.

The Second International Symposium of Translators and Publishers of Turkish Literature, inaugurated by Ertuğrul Günay (the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye), has a functional frame that involves the prospectus for introducing our culture, arts, and literature to the world; presenting our writers  in the international platforms; boosting both the quantity and quality of translated Turkish works; and ultimately, developing the cooperative facilities concerning the institutionalization of Turkish publishing sector in a worldwide range. The Symposium is open to every segments of society as well as authors, publishers, and translators.
